WHITE ROCK, BC.
The White Rock Whalers returned to the pond to take on the Coastal Tsunami as they looked to bounce back after a 4-1 loss to the Delta Ice Hawks on November 9th. This was the second time the Whalers have taken on the Tsunami, previously having defeated them 5-3, but the first time Coastal had played at Centennial Arena.
Coming into the game, White Rock led the Tsunami 1-0 in the Salish Cup, a trophy awarded to the team with the most head to head wins between the Coastal Tsunami, White Rock Whalers and the Richmond Sockeyes.
The Tsunami got off to a quick start in this one as they would score two goals early, but White Rock would respond with two quick goals of their own. Jonah Ussher continued his hot streak with his seventh goal in his last six games to get White Rock even after Captain Travis Smythe got the Whalers on the board just 25 seconds prior as we headed to the second period in a 2-2 tie.
Both teams exchanged chances in the second period, but the period ultimately ended the same way it started, with both teams tied, this time 3-3. White Rock opened the scoring early just 43 seconds into the period after the Tsunami failed to clear the puck out of their zone. Coastal would then answer back at 12:39 of the period thanks to the second goal of the game for Raydon Parkes.
The trend of early goals continued into the third, as the Whalers scored just under two minutes in to make it 4-3 but the Tsunami had an answer, responding with two goals back to back giving them the 5-4 lead. The Whalers went to the powerplay early in the third looking to tie the game after a slashing call against the Tsunami but were unable to capitalise. After a scrum in the Whalers zone the Tsunami were awarded a powerplay and were able to make good on it, putting Coastal up 6-4 with less than 10 minutes to go in the final frame. The Whalers had a number of close chances as they frantically tried to get back into the game, but the Tsunami stood tall as they defeated the Whalers 6-4.
