WHITE ROCK, BC.
After an opening weekend series split to Ridge Meadows and Port Moody, the White Rock Whalers answered with back-to-back wins against the Aldergrove Kodiaks and Grandview Steelers.
Whalers v Aldergrove, September 11, 2024
On Wednesday, September 11th, the Whalers took on the Kodiaks in Aldergrove and notched a 6-1 win. The Whalers exploded with a four-goal first period, with four White Rock Whalers finding the back of the net. Dylan Heer would score at 4:06, Keagan Bankier would score on the Powerplay at 14:52, while Justin Osborne (14:44) and Ethan Whiton (17:40) would cap off a dominant performance.
The second period was void of scoring, but Jonah Ussher would score his second and third goal of the season in the third frame.
Defensively, the Whalers let in just one goal in the first period from Aldergrove. Nathan Windt and Whaler Netminder Zach MacDonald would pick up the win, making 31 saves on 32 shots.
Whaler Head Coach Brien Gemmell was pleased with his team's response to a 1-1 start the previous weekend.
"We were not happy with the Ridge Meadows game, so we were more direct and paid more attention to detail and played a more direct game," Gemmell said.
Whalers v Grandview, September 14, 2024
Saturday saw the Whalers return home to take on Grandview, and the first period saw another offensive surge with goals from Aiden McGregor-Bennett, Jacob Joly, and Quinn Orr.
The Steelers would flip the script in the second frame with a pair of goals.
Whaler Head Coach Brien Gemmell addressed the club's performance in the second period.
"We went into the [first] intermission with some complacency, and Grandview did a good job responding and did not want to go down easy," Gemmell said.
The third period would be a different story for White Rock. Backed by their Goaltender, Garin Wickstrom, who kept them in the game, the Whalers scored three goals in the third with two from Jeevin Bal (:19 and 18:03) and one from Maxwell Kovach at 3:31.
The Steelers would muster one more goal, but it would not be enough. The Whalers would overwhelm the Steelers with 46 shots on goal, while Wickstrom would turn away 33 shots in his winning performance.
