Whalers Continue Early Season Success

WHITE ROCK, BC.

The Whiterock Whalers continue to ride the wave of early-season success. The Whalers have won seven straight games, with the two latest victories coming against Port Moody and North Vancouver over the final days of September.

Whalers at Port Moody, September 29, 2024

On Sunday, September 29th, the Whalers took on the Port Moody Panthers on the road.  The Whalers would put eight goals in the Port Moody net while conceding just three from Port Moody that did not come until the second and third periods.

Five of the eight Whiterock goals came on the Power Play, which made for an efficient night on special teams and something Whalers’ Head Coach, Brien Gemmell, was particularly proud of.

“We capitalized on special teams and have made teams play for taking penalties. It's been good to see our special teams this good early in the season,” Gemmell said.

Dylan Heer, Devon Mahil, Keagan Bankier, Jeevin Bal, and Jonah Ussher scored power-play goals, while Zachary JohnsQuinn Orr chipped in the Whalers' three additional goals.

Goaltending would be another bright spot for Whiterock as Garin Wickstrom would make 36 saves on 39 shots.

Whalers vs Wolfpack, September 30, 2024

Despite scoring early in the game on Monday, the North Vancouver Wolfpack needed help competing against the Whalers, Defesen, which stifled North Vancouver, limiting it to just one goal over the three periods. Meanwhile, six different Whalers would find their way onto the score sheet as goal scorers, with Devon Mahil setting up two of the goals.

Jeevin Bal, Maxwell Kovach, Max Lyons, Keagan Bankier, Travis Smythe, and  Cash Dumka-Jones would all have goals when the game ended.

Zach MacDonald would pick up the win on goal, turning away 25 shots.

Monday also featured the Whalers Truth and Reconciliation game, where the club donned orange third sweaters as part of the Orange Jersey/Every Child Matters Project that brings awareness to the atrocities committed during the Indian Residential School period in Canada.

“It was good to bring people together to bring awareness to the issue, and it was nice having an afternoon game that allowed people to come out and enjoy hockey,” said Whaler Head Coach  Brien Gemmell.

The team also offered free admission to the game for all Semiahmoo players wearing their jerseys!
