Whalers Spilt Weekend Searise After Two Defensive Affairs

WHITE ROCK, BC.

The White Rock Whalers are coming off a weekend series split after a victory over Port Coquitlam and an overtime loss to Grandview.

White Rock at Port Coquitlam, Friday, October 25

Despite both teams being held off the scoreboard in the game’s opening period, the Whlalers answered with a three-goal second period as Justin Osborne (1:43), Kaden Charpentier (10:24), and Jeevin Bal (a power-play goal at 15:21) would score to give the Whalers a 3-1. The Port Coquitlam (POCO)  Trailblazers would notch just one goal in the second and would muster up another in the third period, but the Whalers were able to hold off any further offense and get out of the Port Coquitlam Community Centre with a 3-2 victory.

After the game, Whalers’ Head Coach, Brien Gemmell, offered insight into what made the difference over an improved POCO team from last season.

“We had more depth and were able to produce across four lines,” said Coach Gemmell.

Grandview at White Rock, Saturday, October 26

In the second game of the weekend, the Whalers took on the Grandview Steelers for the second time in less than a week. The game featured an overtime matchup, and the Steelers came away with the win in a low-scoring affair.

In their previous meeting on October 20, the Whalers defeated the Steelers 6-2. However, this rendition saw far less scoring in a defensive battle led by the play of both goalies.

“Both goalies were good. We got a lot of shots off against Grandview’s goalie, Ronin Geraghty, but he played well,” said  Whalers Head Coach Brien Gemmell.

Offensively, after both teams did not score in the first period, Grandview would net their lone regulation goal in the second, and White Rock’s Jonah Ussher scored the club’s only goal and the only goal in the third period.

In overtime, White Rock would take a tripping penalty, and Grandview would score the game-winner.

“We got unlucky, and we were sloppy in overtime. Whenever you take a penalty to go 4-3 in overtime, it can be a ‘death sentence,’ said Gemmell.
