Whalers Wrap Up Regular Season with Overtime Loss to Delta

WHITE ROCK, BC.

The White Rock Whalers concluded their regular season this past week, with their final game taking place on February 8th against Delta in a thrilling overtime battle. Prior to this, the Whalers faced Mission City on February 1st and North Vancouver on February 2nd.

Delta Ice Hawks at White Rock, Feb 8

In their regular-season finale, the Whalers hosted the Delta Ice Hawks in a nail-biting overtime contest. After a closely contested game, the Whalers fell 3-2 in overtime.

The Whalers had to rally after trailing 2-1 following the second period. Travis Smythe scored White Rock’s lone goal in the second period, sandwiched between two goals from Delta. In the third, Justin Osborne netted a short-handed goal to tie the game and force overtime.

Just 90 seconds into the extra frame, Grady Lenton scored the game-winning goal for Delta. In goal, starter Zach MacDonald made 28 saves on 31 shots.

White Rock at North Vancouver Wolfpack, Feb 2

In their penultimate game, the Whalers traveled to North Vancouver to face the Wolfpack but came up short, losing 5-3.

White Rock’s Ty Balchen opened the scoring at 6:47 of the first period, but North Vancouver quickly responded, tying the game at 10:45. The second period saw the Wolfpack surge ahead, scoring three goals to take a 4-1 lead.

In the third, the Whalers mounted a comeback. Balchen scored on the power play, and Dylan Heer added another goal late in the period, but it wasn’t enough. North Vancouver sealed the win with a fifth goal. Whaler goaltender Garin Wickstrom made 35 saves on 39 shots.

Mission City Outlaws at White Rock, Feb 1

The Whalers’ offence was firing on all cylinders in their dominant 13-0 victory over the Mission City Outlaws. White Rock's defence also stepped up, limiting the Outlaws to just 27 shots, while the Whalers fired 49 shots at the Mission City net. Zach MacDonald earned the shutout in goal, turning away every scoring opportunity the Outlaws had.

In the first period, Zachary Johns, Jacob McNally, Quinn Orr, and Ty Balchen each scored, giving White Rock a 4-0 lead. The second period saw four more goals from Devon Mahil, Dylan Heer, Justin Osborne, and Travis Smythe, pushing the lead to 8-0. In the third period, the offensive explosion continued as the Whalers added five more goals, with Max Lyons, Jonah Ussher, Balchen, Smythe, and Johns each finding the back of the net to make it a 13-0 final.

Up Next for the Pod

With the regular season behind them, the Whalers are set to begin their playoff run after finishing in third place in the Tom Shaw Conference with a 29-14-5-0 record, trailing only Delta (1st place) and Richmond (2nd place).
