PJHL's Pilots and Whalers hold Hockey Fights Cancer Game Day Nov. 30

Hockey players from White Rock and Abbotsford will play with an extra-special purpose this Saturday (Nov. 30).

The two Pacific Junior Hockey League teams are hosting a Hockey Fights Cancer Game Day event in efforts to raise donations and awareness about cancer, and cancer research.

Nearly half of Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and most people know someone who has been impacted by the disease.

Players from both the White Rock Whalers and the Abbotsford Pilots will fill out personal "I Fight For" cards that will be displayed at ice level, and there will be team-specific "I Fight For" cards at the front desk for families and fans to fill out. These will be displayed along with the players' cards at ice level.

"This is an important night for our community and team as we come together to raise funds and support for cancer research," said Whalers captain Travis Smythe.

"Sadly, my Opa is currently battling cancer, so this night holds special significance for me."

Coaches from both teams are set to sport mauve ties, and players plan to tape their sticks with mauve tape for the event.

Donations towards fighting cancer will be collected through the evening at the front entrance (drop-off box), and proceeds from the 50/50 and popular Jersey Off His Back draws will also support the cause.

"We are proud to support Hockey Fights Cancer. This event is more than just a game; it's an opportunity to honour those who have been impacted by cancer," noted Whalers assistant captain Zach Johns.

"And we're grateful for all the support from our fans, staff, and everyone else for showing their support."

The two teams face off at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Arena, 14600 North Bluff Rd., White Rock.

Tickets are available at the door.
