White Rock Whalers Announce High Profile Additions to the Coaching Staff for the 2025-26 Season.

White Rock, BC – April 22, 2025 — The White Rock Whalers are proud to announce the additions of David Rutherford, Anthony Ast and Jim Vandermeer to the Coaching Staff for the 2025/26 Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) season. Together, they bring over 1,500 pro games of combined experience to the Whalers’ bench.

David Rutherford | Coach and Director of Player Personnel

David is from Ladner, BC, and had a standout pro career across the ECHL, CHL, AHL, and EIHL, winning multiple championships with the Belfast Giants. His junior resume includes WHL titles with the Vancouver Giants and Spokane Chiefs, and a Memorial Cup in 2008. Known for his energy and offensive firepower, Rutherford brings a sharp competitive edge to the Whalers.

Anthony Ast | Associate Coach

Anthony brings a dynamic perspective to the coaching staff. Born & raised in Richmond, currently living in White Rock, after being the 19th overall pick in the WHL Bantam draft and playing with both the Vancouver Giants and Medicine Hat Tigers, Ast transitioned to professional hockey in Germany. His combined North American and European experience will play a key role in elevating the team’s hockey IQ and composure.

Jim Vandermeer | Associate Coach

Jim is a veteran NHL defenseman who has played for teams including the Flyers, Blackhawks, and Flames. His career also featured roles in the AHL, Swiss NLA, and EIHL, where he served as a player-assistant coach. Vandermeer brings a steady presence and deep defensive insight to the Whalers' blue line.

 

This elite coaching trio will offer players unparalleled mentorship opportunities, experience, and preparation. With strong local ties, international perspective, and professional pedigrees, the Whalers are poised to set a new standard heading into the 2025/26 season.
