WHITE ROCK, BC.
The White Rock Whalers are coming off a weekend split: a 5-2 home win against the Surrey Knights on Saturday and a 6-4 road loss to the Chilliwack Jets. After the weekend, the Whalers sit in third place, 9-3, in the Tom Shaw Conference.
Surrey at Whiterock, Saturday, October 12
After almost a week off from games, Quinn Orr would score his fourth goal of the season early in the first period (6:07), but Surrey would answer to tie things up before White Rock's Keenan Connor would net the go-ahead goal late in the first frame.
Whaler Aiden McGregor-Bennett would add the second period's only score, and Devon Mahil (6:06) and Justin Osborne (19:02) would net two more for White Rock in the third. Surrey could muster just one more goal at 10:48 in the period.
In net, Garin Wickstrom would win by stopping 34 pucks on 36 shots.
"We didn't see a lot of intensity, but we got pucks to the net and did what we needed to do," said Whalers' Head Coach, Brien Gemmell.
White Rock at Chilliwack, Sunday, October 13
On Sunday, Chilliwack would jump up to a 3-1 lead in the first period, with Devon Mahil being the only Whaler goal scorer in the frame.
From there, the Jets would score three more times in period two before White Rock went on a three-goal spree with two more from Mahil, and Jacob McNally would record his first Pacific Junior Hockey League goal.
"We allowed Chilliwack to be physical, and they came out and put pucks on the net and got out to a 3-1 lead," said Whalers' Coach Brien Gemmell.
Gemmell also spoke about special teams in that game. "We were below average on special teams [White Rock would go 1/10 on the Powerplay], and we have to do better and get off to better starts in general," he said.
